He was a Japanese-painter born in Nagano pref. He studied painting under Katei Kodama(児玉果帝). Then, he went to Kyoto and became a pupil and adopted son of Hobun Kikuchi (菊池芳文).He painted historical portrait in Yamato-e (大和絵). He was in a leadership position in Kyoto art world.
