He was a painter born in Oita pref. He studied painting from Chikuden Yanomura(田能村竹田). Chokunyu’s talent recognized and Chikuden bring him in to the family. He was the central figure of Nan-ga(南画:the South school of Chinese painting ) painters in Meiji era. He became a principal of Kyoto-gagaku school (京都画学学校:Kyoto Art School) in 1880.
