He was a painter, son of the poet, Rokkoku Tani (谷麓谷). Buncho Tani (谷文晁) was his brother. Gantan studied painting under his father and brother. He moved to Osaka in his teens, and studied under Okyo Maruyama (丸山応挙). In 1799, he went to Ezo (now Hokkaido) as the member of investigative team and he sketched landscape, animals and plants. In the later of Kansei era, he became an adopted son of Tosyo Shimada (島田図書).
