He was a monk of Rinzai-sect (臨済宗), the first person to spread Zen to Western. He was born in Fukui pref. After graduating Keio University, he went to Ceylon for study. He became a Kancho (官長: a responsible person of temple) of both Enkaku-ji temple (円覚寺) and Kencho-ji temple (建長寺). Also, he was a president of Hanazono Univercity.
