Enku

1632～1695
He was a monk born in Gifu. It is said he carved 12,000 the statues of Buddha in his life. He was not bound by the particular sect and carved the statues to take root in syncretism of Buddhism and Shintoism. Even now, many of his Buddha statues are objects of faith.
