He was a Japanese-style painter born in Edo (now Tokyo). He was a son of a painter, Chinzan Tsubaki (椿椿山). He studied painting under Kazan Watanabe (渡辺崋山) from his childhood. When he was 15, he was given a pen name, Kakoku. The number of his works is very small because he died at the young age of 26.
