He was a Japanese-style painter born in Kyoto. He studied not only painting but Confucianism and national learning. He was good at Yamato-e printing (大和絵). Following his motto,” Read many books, travel many miles”, he traveled across the country and became a major person in Nan-ga (南画: the south school of Chinese painting ). When he was 84, his son died. Around this time, his work became creative and these works are extremely popular. His works are magnificent scale and exude presence.
